Juventus versus Lazio, a classic match-up which has presented several important moments across the decades. Like this one from the 90s, when the two captains – Roberto Baggio and Beppe Signori – were club opponents but teammates in the national team, taking to the field at the 1994 World Cup together.
LAST TIME OUT
The last time Juventus hosted Lazio, the Old Lady emerged victorious with a 3-1 win. The two standout performers in that match are shown above: Adrien Rabiot cancelled out the visitor’s opener, as the two sides headed into the tunnel level at half-time. In the second half, Alvaro Morata scored twice in the space of three minutes to secure the win, continuing the Bianconeri’s strong record against Lazio at the Allianz: eight victories in 10 matches.
THE TEAM'S RESPONSE
22 January 2017: it’s a Juventus with a surprise 4-2-3-1 formation under Coach Allegri, and the team’s response to this new and offensive approach is more than positive. The match was all but over after just 17 minutes thanks to goals from Paolo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain.
FINO ALLA FINE
Just six matches remained until the culmination of the 2001-02 championship. At the Delle Alpi Stadium, David Trezeguet responded to Lazio's goal scored by Claudio Lopez, and the scoreline remained unchanged at the full-time whistle, leaving Juventus six points behind the top of the Serie A table. But at the end of the match, Marcello Lippi had this to say to the journalists who thought the Bianconeri were out of the title race: “Juve won't give up.” How right he was, as the Scudetto win was secured in the last 90 minutes of the season.
BUSO AND LAUDRUP
11 June 1989: Juventus-Lazio was a thrilling end-of-season match-up which ended 4-2 in favour of the Bianconeri at the Comunale. Our number 9 was Renato Buso, who at just 19 years of age, took the match by the scruff of its neck and scored a brace. In the stands - visible in the background - an invitation to Miki Laudrup to remain in Turin, but the Dane would move to Spain, destination Barcelona.
FOUR IN A ROW
This photo depicts a moment from Juventus-Lazio in 1961, with Giampiero Boniperti bursting into the opponent's area. The Juventus team, which dominated the period from 1957 to that year with three championship titles in four years, achieved four consecutive victories against the Biancocelesti. The results are all one-sided, with a two-goal difference in all and in one case - in 1959 - there was even a tennis-match scoreline: 6-1 in Juve’s favour.
