30 May 2023
Juventus Women are eagerly awaiting their last match of the 2022/23 season: a sixth encounter this campaign against Roma. The reward for the winner: the Italian Cup, the last trophy up for grabs this season. As reigning champions, the Bianconere are ready to give everything to continue their streak of at least one trophy won in every season in their history. It's therefore all to play for at the Arechi Stadium in Salerno on Sunday afternoon.
Ahead of this weekend's match-up, let's take a look back at last season's Cup final against the very same foes.
ALL THE EMOTIONS FROM FERRARA
The Paolo Mazza Stadium in Ferrara was the scene of the Italian Cup final on 22 May 2022. The opponents, now a constant in recent years, was Roma.
Juventus lined up for the final as Scudetto champions for the fifth time in a row, with January's Super Cup sitting in their trophy cabinet as well. The goal, later achieved, was to win all three available Italian trophies for the first time in a single year. Roma, this season, are looking to achieve the same feat.
After a tiring yet special season, in which Juventus also gave a strong account of themselves in the UEFA Women's Champions League, it would take immense concentration, determination and spirit to conquer the domestic treble in the last encounter of the season. And the task became even more difficult as Roma deservedly took the lead towards the end of the first half thanks to Andressa Alves's spot-kick.
Yet, as they had shown the entire season, this was a Juventus Women team that refused to back down.
In the 80th minute, Cristiana Girelli kept her cool from the penalty spot to level matters, and then, with just six minutes left on the clock, utter delirium: Sara Gama's shot deflected off a defender and into the back of the net in what would turn out to be the trophy-winning strike. The treble had been completed. A simply unforgettable final.
