13 July 2023
Juventus will play the first friendly match of the 2023 Soccer Champions Tour against Barcelona in California at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, about sixty kilometers from the more famous San Francisco, on 22 July 2023.
Let's discover more about the Californian city.
SAN FRANCISCO, AN OVERVIEW
It is the fourth largest city in California by population (after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose) and ranks twelfth among the most populous cities in the United States.
It is part of a vast metropolitan area - which has about 7 million inhabitants and is the fifth largest in the entire country - called the "San Francisco Bay Area" of which it has always been the economic-financial, cultural and touristic centre. It is a popular destination for many international tourists and is known for its cool summer fog, its steep hills, its cultural vibrancy and its architectural eclecticism which combines Victorian and modern architecture, its famous landscapes (Golden Gate Bridge being one of the most popular), its trams, Alcatraz Island and Chinatown. In addition, the local branch of the University of California is one of the most important biomedical centers in the world and the hospital is among the leading medical facilities in the United States.
GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
Golden Gate Bridge has been the symbol of the city for years. It is a suspension bridge that overlooks the Golden Gate, the strait that connects the Pacific Ocean with the city bay. It connects San Francisco, on the northern tip of the peninsula of the same name, with the southern part of Marin County.
Completed in 1937, the bridge is 2.71 kilometres long and 67 metres high, while the distance between the towers is 1282 metres.
It has an orange hue, called international orange, chosen also and above all because it makes it more visible in the famous San Francisco fog.
SPORTING CITY
San Francisco is a sporting hub.
Think for a moment about three sports typical of the United States... and surely basketball, American football and baseball come to mind.
And San Francisco is represented in all three of these major US professional leagues.
In basketball, of course, we are talking about the Golden State Warriors, the flagship of the top professional basketball league in the USA (NBA). Starting with the 2019/2020 season, the team left the Oracle Arena in Oakland - a city located on the east coast of the San Francisco bay - to move to the Chase Center in San Francisco, on the other side of the bay.
In American football - specifically in the NFL - there are the San Francisco 49ers who play at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, the venue in which Juventus will play.
And last, but certainly not least, the San Francisco Giants who play at AT&T Park in San Francisco and play in the MLB (Major League Baseball), the country's professional baseball league.
